Henry Morton Stanley’s 1875 appeal for missionaries to go into what is now Uganda set off dramatic encounters between the British and the advanced African kingdoms they found there.

Buganda co-operated, Bunyoro resisted. ‘Two Kingdoms of Uganda’ tells the story in a way that will appeal to African specialists and general readers alike. The book draws together Cedric Pulford’s two previous works about Uganda, with significant new material. It highlights the key role of the Church Mission Society, from the days of the heroic Alexander Mackay, in the emergence of the modern nation.

After Oxford University, the author has worked widely in Africa as a journalist and lecturer.
