Sudan's ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity is represented by a population of 26 million and 19 major ethnic groups. The country’s situation has exposed the need to work towards an open society. This book, edited by Stuart E. Brown, testifies to the continuing religious and cultural openness and to the challenges facing Sudan.

Many of the papers contained in the book were presented in a Conference held in Limuru, Kenya, in February 1997, and advance the understanding of Sudan's Christian and religious heritage. They are a valuable tool of understanding and a resource in the search for peace and reconciliation.
